There are many types of counselling and psychotherapy. The practice I offer is psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This differs from many other therapies because it is usually a long-term process aiming for deep-seated and lasting change within our personality and our emotional development rather than symptom relief. It may often mean that we need to dig deeper into the less conscious areas of ourselves rather than taking what is on the surface at face value. Hopefully, in the process, many symptoms will be relieved but this will take time and commitment. It is not an easy option and it can sometimes take courage to face oneself and admit we need help. However, we will always start with what is the initial problem that brings you to therapy and examine the context of the difficulties. Having said that, an initial consultation or short period of work can be beneficial. Just having someone to listen attentively and with compassion can feel enormously helpful in itself and should lead on to a new outlook and perspective on those difficulties.
Why come for Help?
It can feel daunting for some people to take that first step. Most people come because they feel stuck in their lives or are depressed, often not having a secure sense of self and confidence. You do not need to be ill to come for therapy! Other people come with specific difficulties ranging from general stress, anxiety and depression to difficulties in relationships of all kinds, at work and at home - anything that means life is difficult and makes it hard to move on or make the most of what you have. This can happen at any age or stage in life. Many people feel their strong emotions overwhelm them - be it anger or sadness - making it hard to function.
Some of the difficulties I have helped:
- Panic Attacks
- Isolation and loneliness
- Bereavement and grief
- Redundancy and work problems
- Pregnancy and fertility
- Sexuality issues
- Illness and psychosomatic issues
- Parenting issues
- Difficulties studying and concentration
I also work with those in training and offer supervision.
